Im completly new to audi ownership and fault codes etc. How would I extract error codes from the ECU to confirm my problem?

Im going to change the fuel filter as per this thread. Is an Audi genuine filter a must or are the after market ones as good?

I had a peek under the bonnet today. I assume the diesel filter is the one on the drivers side of the engine bay underneith a piece of carpet, with what looks like 4 hoses are connected?

Stick with Audi filters, it saves a load of hassle in the long run.

Not sure on your engine where the filter is but once you have the new one you can compare, but it does sound like you are looking at the correct part

You will need to fill the new filter with fresh diesel before fitting the pipes, this makes for easier starting and prevents running the battery flat trying to pump the fuel up to the engine.

VCDS aka Vag-Com is best for reading and clearing codes, costs around £270 and you require a laptop but if you are keeping the car then it makes sense to invest in one
