Default Overhead interior lights, boot light

Hi there. I've just bought a very pretty, very clean '99 2.8 and I'm completely hooked. There a a couple of glitches: the footwell lights work fine but the overheads and boot light don't. Can't imagine all five bulbs have blown and don't want to start prising off light covers if there's another fix. Any ideas?

Hi moono501!

Welcome to the Audi A8 forum in the UK!

My first guess would be to have a look at the fuses. They are situated to the right of your accelarator pedal and it could be as easy as that.

We're all suckers for photos of new members' A8s

After you checked the fuses try the connectors on the V94 (central locking control module). Ian will be able to confirm but the sentral locking pump has a control unit which governs the interior lights and the boot lights & has some connector that may need attention.

And the next stupid question.. You've tested all the switches on the lights themselves?

It is possible that he previous owner has just let all the bulbs blow over the years though...

Indeedy - Can you make them work manually, ie is it an automatic lighting failure, or in fact are the bulbs completely dead ?...

Wow, thanks everyone. These replies are really helpful. I've checked fuses, switches etc but not the V94 to the central locking unit. Er.. where will I find it? I'll put up a pic/pics of the car as soon as I've got some to post, promise (don't need much of an excuse to show it off!).

V94 is proly with the central locking pump in the n/s rear quarter panel near the aerial; boot trim, CD changer etc needs to be removed which is fairly easy.

Did you manage to get to the bottom of this? I traced the wires to the boot lights and they only go to the CL pump in the back. The connection there seemed fine though. There is a good GND connection to the lights, it's the 12V that are missing. Can the lights be coded differently using VAGCOM?

It turns out that it was a 10A blown fuse (1 brown for central locking). I suspect something had shorted it and blown it when I had tried to check, most likely the lights in the boot. All working now.
