Sat Nav. Upgrade?

I've never had a car with GPS Nav before. The Audi system is plainly a bit old but perfectly adequate for me. I made it a lot more useful by selecting the map to North orientation. All I need is to see my present position but how can I get the mostest out of what is fitted?

For example, what is the latest disc and are there any software updates available for the kit?

Are there any settings which make a big difference to the performance of the thing?
