Apparently VW group cars are not immune either (including Audi and the A8), not going to say here but Google is your friend.
I feel sorry for the BMW owners and the way they are handling the whole thing.

Pretty much any car that uses a similar system can be a target.. Mine is a bugger to check that it's locked as my colleague found out the other day when putting a new parking ticket in the car.. kept trying the handle to check was locked, and it kept unlocking itself

Nothing new here, pretty much any car is vulnerable to this, other cars that use physical lock just need lock cylinder broken as well which takes couple of seconds.
 And £6300 device? most of cars in VAG group can be done with sub-£20 cable from e-bay.

Not new.
Still, I prefer Beemer to VAG. Never thought I'd ever say this, but it's a fact Beemers run rings round the equivalent Audi, despite being RWD. I test drove a last of the line BMW M5 E39, and no way would a D2 S8 outrun that thing. Better support of their older models too - you can still get most of the parts for a 1975 BMW 1602, whereas with Audi... ...I rest my case.
