You can get HID kits off ebay which make a huge difference.. Still not great though.
The difference in light from my D2 to D3 is phenomenal... Easiest way to fit is to either mount the ballast on the back of the headlight cover if they're small enough, or pop the headlights out and cable tie them to the beam below.
