Appreciate the info
Removing the sparkplugs today and having a look at the pistons with a boreoscope. Should be som traces if the valves hit the pistons i would assume.. I can still manually turn it without feeling any interference between pistons and valves. As for the timing i did set the crank to the position and the cams look pretty much in level(facing ditectly towards each other) The car is jacked up pretty high on jackstands,(car sits in a steep angle) wondering if that may have caused the oil usually left in the heads to return to then pan and this causing more chain rattle at startup then normal(when cold) All this might give me a reason to buy a D3

Put to 2 bolts into the holes in the cam sprocket and used a level thingie
This should give and indicator IF the engine is in level(?) Any thoughts?

Why are you showing pictures of the spirt levels bubble? It's the holes that are the important thing. that they are inline! It is easer with the cam locking bar I'd lend you mine but the postage would be a fortune. It does sound like you engine is normal to be honest, the belt can go slack at when the engine is off. The Offside cam (uk) the valve springs can keep turning the cam and over time squash the tensioner and put slack in the v of the belt. This jumps back when the engine is cranked over. And it makes a noise when it does it!
The cam chain tensioner on the variators at the back of the engine make a noise on startup. It is not always a quiet engine on startup! there is a lot about it already on the forums there are some design issues with the 40valve and I'm not that good at explaining them in text but I hope this helps Dave

The reason for the spirt level(learned a new word) is to determine if the inner holes are at the same level. From my understanding the 2-eyed bracket are to be horizontal when all 4 holes are inline. Therefor the spirt level is showing that the inner holes are level(so is the intake on the car, as a reference to the engine being horizontal)they might be 1-2 tooth off, but that would mean that both sprockets are equally amounts of tett off.. Or is my engineering skills worthless? As mentioned earlier, i can turn the engine manually and nothing tourches but i'm really wanting to make sure before i do another startup and maaayybe ruin the whole engine.. Just ordered the bar and pin for the crank from the US... 2-3 weeks before it arrives...

Tool arrived - One tooth off?
So, the Cam alignment tool along with the crank lock pin finally arrived.
The Cam tool did not fit between the cams when crank at TDC. I had to adjust it(removing crank pin first) just a little bit in order for it to fit. As far as i can see it is 1 tooth off? And the question is, what are the chances that this may have bent a few or more valves?

Every engines different but I've had engines before when one tooth out and they have not clipped , you have the thickness of the head gasket and some combustion space , diesels can run much closer as less chamber
When at top dead on the crank , the cam that is out which way do you have to turn the cam to get it to align .... clock or anti clock . Put it correct and cross your fingers when starting . |
