Guys; thanks all of you for your prompt responses.
So two final queries about Oil filters: 1) Do I swap the filter and then do the oil change? 2) Do I need any other 'bits' other than the oil and the filter? thanks - Julian |

Get it all warmed up like alrerady said switch off ....(very important ), undo oil filter housing in the middle of the vee, think its 30 mm socket ( not 100% ) undo it till it just pulls out then let it stand ,this allows the cup full of oil in the housing to drain back to sump .
Vac it out with your sucker , fit your new oil filter and seal ( mann filters are good) , tighten oil filter housing up ... its only plastic , so 3 foot long breaker bar with scaffolding tube over that is not nessasary as with some i come across. Add fresh oil up to the mark , run it up ,make sure oil light goes out , re check level , should be good to go . |

Yes, as others said, this car is so easy, hardly have to bend over, let alone lie down. I use this one http://www.a1plantsales.com/pumps-c5...phon-p343/s343
and it comes with 3 semi-rigid pipes of declining diameter that join together. The largest two are needed for this job and stick it down the dipstick tube until you feel it stop (hits bottom) and then pull out 15mm or so to stop it being restricted on the bottom of the sump. Pump a vacuum with the handle and it fills up with and cuts off when full, you then have to drain into an old 5 litre container and do the other 3-4 litres. When it starts gurgling, push the tube down to the bottom to remove the ullage. There is usually some left in the bottom of the filter housing that I suck out too, maybe an egg-cup full. I also evacuate the power steering fluid reservoir and refill with the green CHF11S at every oil change - that is about £7-12 a litre depending on supplier and offers (GSF is good when the have the 40% off code at weekends) Sometimes the oil is £18.99 a pack on ebay, but not today. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Quantum-Lo...-/182020506393 Take the old oil to the tip in old oil or washer fluid containers. |

Thanks Guys, once again, for all your useful and helpful advice.
I happened to be in Lidl yesterday and picked up the oil pump thay had on sale, so I'm going to 'give it a go' with that. Just one last query I forgot to add earlier: What VCDS SRI options do you perform? [Set and oil change as 'longlife'; set as 'longlife' but oil change and SRI after 12 months/10000 miles; set and oil change as 'fixed' 12 months/10000 miles]? [I see that these 'unbranded' oils claim to be for 'Longlife' service and have low SAPS contents for DPF equipped Diesels [like mine]]. Regards - Julian |

I didn't alter any service reminders with VCDS.

Is there no jump start terminals under the bonnet on D3?

No. I just reset my reminders automatically, and but I change the oil every 6 months/7,000 miles so I am resetting it long before it comes up with a message

It's an oversight in my book. One they put right in the D4, I believe. Even my 1998 BMW e46, and I think even my 1994 e36 had a positive terminal under the bonnet.
I've just bought the Lidl special too. Whinced when I saw the length of the leads. ![]()
