I've not driven a D4 or a car with the new ZF 8 speed 'box, but all the reviews of it suggest it's near faultless, in terms of efficiency, speed and the electronics knowing which gear to be in when you want it. It's used in tons of cars right now isn't it, like the go to auto 'box for all manufacturers.

I think if its a 3.0 tdi D4 then you will get the 7 speed s-tronic gearbox but for the 4.2tdi and S8 and W12 etc they stuck with the ZF 8 speed as it can handle more torque than the s-tronic box

I just checked Audi website and thankfully not.. that would have been a deal breaker for me....
"8-speed tiptronic transmission with electronically-transmitted shift information and Dynamic Shift Programme (DSP)"

oh ok my bad, I was foolishly assuming that what they had applied to the A7 they would have also applied to the A8 but it seems not!!

I've never driven a D4 so can't comment on them, but my X5 has the ZF 8HP 8 speed transmission which is probably fundamentaly the same as the one in the D4 and it is a fabulous gearbox.

Both our family cars have been autos since 2006 and there have been a few before this one, all of which I've often switched to manual control especially for more 'spirited' driving.

I can honestly say I barely touch the paddles on the X5 though, it's just not necessary, in fact I probably couldn't tell you which gear I am in most of the times, the gear changes, up and down, are almost imperceptible.

And you know how some auto boxes have that kind of hesitation when slowing down at roundabouts, then speeding up again? Have never noticed that with this car.

If it's as good in the D4, then I'd highly recommend it.

I've been test-driving a few cars with 8-speed auto boxes recently, though I don't know who makes the boxes, but they've all been extremely smooth with imperceptible changes.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions and extended leather. Ski hatch retrofit. Aftermarket reversing camera. DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant.
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I can concur with this, I own the D3 Quattro Sport and looking at some point to get a V8 LWB 4.2Tdi and the test drive on that went extremely well, it was a very smooth ride, even spirited driving was coped with exceptionally well. I'm not sure what's in it, but what ever it is, it works very well. I would imagine a remapped D4 V8 4.2 Diesel to show the D3 S8 a trick or two, as I've driven one on those also and I don't think it would take much more power and torque to make it the quicker and faster car.

Regards,

Mark

Model: MY 2008 08 3.0TDI Quattro Sport, Black on Black (Transporter Edition) Lowered 60mm on drop link bars. Alloys swapped out to RS6 style 20" x 9.5". It's got full tints on all windows, and has the black leather interior. Remapped by Elite Automotive in Cornwall, giving an increase output to 290bhp/450lbs.

Options: Keyless Entry & Start, Bluetooth Hands Free, Quad Zone Climate, 3 Spoke Sports Tiptronic Multi Function Steering Wheel, Black Leather Comfort Seats, AMI, Drivers & Passenger Electric Memory Seats, Auto Dimming Mirrors, Bi-Xenons.

Future Plans:
Selling my current Audi A8 Quattro Sport and replace is with a newer D4 Audi A8L with the 4.2V8 Twin Turbo setup once again it must be black. I'm looking for one with the options added where it has the rear recliing seats, with heated outers. Bose speakers minimum and B&O's if affordable. Rear and back door sun blinds prefered.

Planned Mods:
Upon the arrival of my A8L D4, I will be once again having the ECU remapped to a performance setting over economy. Rear Tints as dark as can go whilst also tinting the front windows with a medium tint. Once again I will be purchasing lowering links for the air ride suspension and setting it at 55mm lower when in comfort as my desire rideheight over standard. Alloys will be 21" however the one current most likly to be the next car already has a brand new set of 2016 S8Plus wheels on it.
