Sounds really good! You will have one of the best 8s out there when your done.

The rebuild sounds rights, I would expect to see bearings, gaskets, and any wearing parts replaced, and the gears inspected; but not replaced (a gear set for a 5speed manual is typically £500-1000, and I would expect it to be near to, if not greater than the later for an s8, but they arnt regarded as wearing parts asuming it's properly lubricated.

Yep, looking forward to it. They have fully stripped it down and it's all looking good in there, anyone uses a Kevlar clutch before? It's a heavy duty one. Ben gave it another health check and it came out all good, it will have had it's tracking and wheels balanced before I get it back too, and I have some new wood for it
Been driving girlfriends top of the range 1.4 Corsa auto with 15k miles on it,the thing does not move!

Took them one day to rebuild it, well they put a heavy duty Kevlar clutch in, which after googling seems quite good and rebuilt the torque converter. Everything else in gearbox was rock solid. Ben should have it back in the car by tomorrow. Paid the company £1004.38.
I really hope the gearbox feels super smooth after handing over that amount of money. Still need to pay Ben then send the invoice to the AA who will then send me the cheque for £475, have to pay £25 excess.

Quick question, PaulW on Audipages says to only use Audi fluid. The gearbox place gets it from somewhere else but its the same spec, so I told them to supply the gearbox 'dry' and Ben will fill it with genuine Audi fluid.

Is the Audi fluid really that important? The box gets a free service in 1k miles and I don't think they will use Audi fluid then unless I supply it.

The Audi fluid is an Esso fluid I believe... Pretty sure Tozo uses something in there that isn't the 'Audi' fluid too.

I seem to remember Oli did a post on lubricants as he worked for ESSO or Shell. It listed what the Audi fluids actually were and what you could use instead. I'll look for it.

Edit:

Found it.

I'm really interested in the results of this. A full rebuild for £1000, plus obviously removal/refit at mate's rates does somewhat alleviate the Gearbox Fear that is a common feature of 8 ownership!

Please don't tell me about alternative cheaper gearbox fluids though, recently had mine changed and the fluid cost me about £100!!
