This rings a bell....
Is it not that the pre facelift lights don't have an inner brake light, so when the later lights are retrofitted, there is no wire to drive the inner brake light so only the outer one works ? I have no D3 to verify but though that was the conclusion I drew.....

I fitted facelift tail lights to my d3 s8 today and I haven't tested yet if the inner lights also go brighter during braking but I did see that the inner lights have the reverse part working in the clear (non red) strip however the bit I expected to blink yellow with the outside indicators didn't lit up... can anyone with a facelift d3 from factory confirm if the inner lights should also blink?

Hello, the inner ambers don't light up, there are no LEDs in there as far as I can tell with a torch.

I can confirm the facelift inner lights do not light up when indicating - that's reserved for the outer lights.
...Shame, really. I think they would have looked really good.
