Default Previous bills!

Hello all

My new (to me) S8 came with full main dealer history and paperwork, receipts, bills, invoices etc that I have finally had a chance to go through in detail.

2 jobs that stand out, completed just before I bought the car with the mileage about to go north of 90k was both the power steering pump and the inlet manifold flaps replaced, total bill over 4K! It states the engine had to come out for the power steering pump to be changed!

Anyway, feel like I've dodged a bullet, particularly as I normal conduct mega research before I buy a car but in this case followed my heart!

Am I right!?

The power steering pump is an engine out job and the manifold at the dealer would usually be a replacement so yes good things to have done assuming it's been done correctly

You also have a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty on parts fitted by a main dealer. This might be subject to maintaining a main dealer service history though.

2 years on parts but only 3 months or 3k miles on workmanship which I think is crazy. Then they say the workmanship warrantee is not transferable to a new owner. A story for another day..

I too had a power steering pump replaced on mine. Just before the used approved warrantee ran out. A Lucky escape on that at least.

I didn't know that.

Says a lot about the confidence they have in their own work; "we use good parts but our mechanics are incompetent."

The case study being...

Audi do some work on a 7 speed s tronic. They Over tighten / cross thread the oil filler cap. Car is then immediately sent to auction. Subsequently, the car looses all transmission oil on the road resulting in Catastrophic gearbox failure. Taken to different audi dealer who diagnoses the fault, stating workmanship being the cause. Then, the dealer who did the work just wash their hands of all responsibility. They do not deny that workmanship caused the failure, they just claim that the workmanship warrantee is not transferable and that the new owner has no contractual relationship with the dealer that carried out the work. (Meanwhile a new gearbox is £10.5k!)

All of this occurred within the 3 month (3k) workmanship warranted period. The New owner is left wondering what value there is seeking out a used car with full audi main dealer service history. I will let you know how the story ends!

Wow!! When you read about examples of incompetence like this and Lee S's recent experience at a main dealer ( thread below ) it puts the main dealers in a very poor light........extortionate pricing for poor workmanship and sketchy product knowledge doesn't bode well for anyone buying new or used from them.

I'm sure there's good and bad out there but I'd want peace of mind if I was spending tens of thousands on a car.

The problem with the dealerships is everyone and every department has weekly/monthly targets for productivity and finding extra work.
They get bonuses in their wages and in the form of perks for this and also electronic leaderboards in the workshop.
They all therefore want to chase the low-hanging fruit like unnecessary and overpriced brake jobs and avoid one-off stuff like leaking transmissions.

In my experience with a few Audi Dealers in Ireland, the 2 year parts warranty is fully inclusive of parts and labour regardless of mileage.
I have always found them very fair and sometimes quite generous in relation to goodwill in the case of items outside warranty. Im sure standards vary widely between Dealers and it may be worth seeking out a good one rather than the closest one.

It's like anything. There are good and not so good. I attach a typical T&C's from a large Audi franchise group with the 3 month (3k) limits.
