Ouch!!
![]() I know just how you must feel Mike. An elderly neighbour has reversed into my car a couple of times while manoeuvring out of his garage. I had my bumper repaired at my own cost the last time, but made sure he was aware what he'd done (he initially denied it until I pointed out the large dent in his car, covered in my car's black paint, and the red paint transfer on my car from his). Now his wife stands behind my car every time he reverses out of his garage, shouting loudly at him and banging on his car every time he almost runs her over! (which happens frequently). He really shouldn't be driving. His driving ability is worse than that of a drunk to be honest; there's a real risk that he's going to kill someone. However, I don't think the problem is age per se. Some older/elderly folk are very good drivers and, conversely, some younger people are very poor drivers, so I don't think it would be fair to insist on frequent retesting for everyone over a certain age. I do think things like age, inexperience and accident history should be trigger factors though. Perhaps the solution would be to devise a test for such higher-risk groups that provides a driver competence and response-time rating, rather than a simple pass/fail. Those that score highly should not be required to be retested as often as those who obtain a very low score.

It does pose some interesting questions. My father is now 90 and still drives.....rather badly at times as his spatial awareness seems to have got worse over the last 5 years. However, his driving improved remarkably last year when he had his cataracts done!! So I think eyesight plays a large part in elderly drivers capabilities.
He was a police road motor patrol driver in the days of Wolsely 6/90s and Jags so he has a good driving pedigree and had a really good awareness/anticipation of others, reading the road ahead, driving within the limits of the car/road conditions etc. and up to the age of 80 odd was perfectly OK but now shows a lack of confidence as he gets frailer. He should be given a test I think but all he actually needs to renew his licence(as is compulsory over 70) is a Doctors note.

I couldn't agree more . . . .
![]() This happened 2 weekends ago when I was forced into a kerb as an elderly gentleman in a golf decided he needed to cut across my lane at the top of a slip road to a roundabout but didnt check if anyone was next to him, so I had a choice of either pull left and force my wheel into the kerb or his left rear wing would have hit my front wing and bumper exactly like yours Mike. He didnt stop for the next 2 miles either despite me trying to get him to pull over etc

I do feel for all of you with "Asda/Tesco" type damage.
I've had a few over the years, even suffered three on the 8. Two were the "nobody there" ones but one was an elderly guy who I saw having a few tries at parking, front end first. This old boy managed to hit our 8 twice and then denied it when I spoke to him, and his wife ran away. Turned out that he was five years younger than my 75 at the time. By the way I am currently in my 77th year. I have been taking an annual medical and doing a CPC course every year to keep my bus licence alive. I am still licensed to drive a double decker with trailer, though I have let all my other vocational licenses lapse. I think that Mark has made a couple of valid points and would agree with tests like that if they were instigated correctly. I can only warn you all in advance:- Be aware at all meets where this old fogey is attending.
