The filler tube (coming from the filler cap) runs along the inside top of the tank down the centre. It ensures that any fuel poured into the tank goes directly into the fuel bowl where the pump sits - nice feature!
Anyway, the receptacle inside the tank that the fuel pump assembly mates to (the cream plastic assembly that all the in-tank hoses attach to) has a large hook on top of it. The hook hooks over the filler tube and hangs the assembly up above the saddle of the tank. (I hope that's clearer than mud!)

Have you looked at ElsaWin istructions? I have done it on 3 cars with success. The important bit is to get this pipe to slot in the right place.

Apologies if you know this already but the Service Manual for the Fuel Supply Sysyem (in the Tech Dump under "D2 - Common Faults" ) Sect 3.6 has a step by step guide to the fitting of the pump.
I printed it out for my indy garage when they checked mine for fuel issues. They put their smallest technician into the boot to do the job but he still complained that it was a barsteward of a job.

Ok. Took it all out and started again. Same prob tho. 2/3 of a tank and we 'run outta fuel'.
So my question is this. My new pump has same part no etc however only has one big hole at the bottom, not the extra little one. Also it's about half a centimetre longer, so it doesn't push done beyond the 2 little wing clips... This is my issue isn't it? More than likely...? |

Yep!
Without the second hole you don't operate the 'suction jet pumps' on the ends of the hoses. Therefore you only get whatever fuel can feed the pump bowl directly. You'll have to reinvest in a Siemens VDO pump (only trust Siemens VDO). World Impex used to be a good source, but I can't find it on their website anymore. Try the forum sponsor, or World Car Parts seem to have the right one...
