It is a noticable change as I noted a couple of years back. But I would like to know exactly what it does. Does it just change the gear shift points in Drive or does it also change the Sport settings?( I cant really detect any difference in Sport). Does it change fuel/air settings or is it confined to gearbox setup?

I've been thinking of doing this with mine soon, I've noticed that when the wife is driving (mostly around town), it seems to use more fuel. I think it's because it's holding 3rd until nearly 35mph and not changing to 4th (whereas I usually drive in tip mode).

Having looked at the link in the OP www.audipages.com it looks like the xxx1x is de-activating the dynamic shift program (DSP).

There is a line that says "The dynamic index number controls how the transmission shifts. If your A8 has the stock transmission coding of 00002, then it sums dynamic index number closer to "old man mode" versus "sport mode"." So it also looks like the xxx1x is activating the "Sport Mode" which surely should be activated in an S8 by default?

Adding in that extra 1 at 00X1X made rather subtle changes for me.
It seemed to be more responsive to change of driving style though that's difficult to measure.
It DEFINITELY would change up to higher gears when driven gently or on cruise control at local road speeds whereas before it was often stuck needlessly at higher revs when "pottering".
The latter behaviour was noticeable and made "wafting along" feel better too.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions and extended leather. Ski hatch retrofit. Aftermarket reversing camera. DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant.
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!
