They're pretty new (~2 years). VW does it - either/both the 1.4 & 2L F/TSI engines. They were done as a direct result of FSI carbon issues, though of course they claim some positive 'benefits' as the reason they've done it!
As for F/TSI in general, EGR is also a contributing factor, as it generally puts hot recycled exhaust gases into the inlet manifold to bake the PCV oil vapour... Diesels have been DI for ever and have only started having carbon and tar issues since EGR was introduced. Catch cans are an excellent solution. As is inlet manifold cleaners (spray-in solvents like Liqui Moly) used regularly.
