I drove my PF S8 from Dorchester to Exeter in limp mode before the car died completely! Subsequently I found out it wasn't the gearbox at all but the alternator had self destructed. I was running on the battery and below a set voltage the TCU gives up and shoves the box in limp mode.

After having had a nose at the photo MJ posted, it reminded me of my gearbox woes which I've cunningly hidden in the Engine/Under the bonnet section here:
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7550 Your current situation as described seems to be very similar to mine - my A-drum has some of the top lip destroyed, which was discovered when it went to KSM in Carshalton, Surrey for a rebuild. I was able to select reverse no problem, and it went into limp-home mode aka thump mode upon selecting drive. The thread posted above contains plenty of pics. When my gearbox went 'bang', I drove it for 13 miles back home from Gatwick, and then 3 miles to Carshalton where it was going to be repaired. Auto gearbox man told me to take it steady and not rev it too much - seemed to be quite happy on the way back home. Traffic light starts were of a glacial pace, at best so I used my hazard warning lights to good effect. I hope it's not terminal for you - it was the enthusiastic and caring response on this very forum that persuaded me to spend the money and get it sorted. I'd have only possibly experienced the exact same issue if I were to have gone out and bought a replacement car of a similar age. Hope all goes well and keep us all posted.

Very similar symptoms to mine, which was terminal I’m afraid.
Had to reverse onto the scrappers lorry because reverse worked fine... Still wish I’d repaired rather than scrapped though |

Right folks, error codes read and bringing up the one, 17114 (Incorrect Ratio).
Garage is recommending a fluid and filter change first, just in case. Discuss. I'm off to have a little cry.

Well Ross-Tech says:
17114/P0730/001840 - Gear Ratio Monitoring: Incorrect Gear Ratio Possible Causes Transmission Fluid contaminated Transmission faulty (Mechanical Problem) Possible Solutions Check Transmission Fluid (Color and Contamination) Replace Transmission Fluid when necessary Check Transmission Mechanics Given that a rebuild (if required) is going to cost a fair bit is it worth "trying" a filter/fluid change? That is also not cheap but..... Does your garage have the capability of removing the gearbox for shipping to a repairer or will the whole car need taking there?

IMO an oil change is a bit of a waste of money at this point, given that reverse works. The best it can do is give a vague indication of what's wrong by the condition of the old oil, but equally it may not tell you anything.
If you want, they could get an oil sample by pulling the small drain plug in the sump. You can remove that plug, get a sample of oil, and put the plug back easily without losing enough to make a difference. Dip some white paper in to the sample to get a good look at it. The oil should be a grey-yellow colour, should smell slightly fishy, and should be clear with no suspended debris. Whatever it comes out like, there's no point changing it because its either perfectly ok, indicating a mechanical problem, or its not ok, indicating a different mechanical problem ![]() Tbh all the garage can do at this point is narrow down potential failures, which doesn't help you at all since it'll have to go to Mackies anyway. |

Quote from my original blown gearbox thread, as mentioned previously:
"I've just spoken to a chap based on a recommendation from the garage which looks after my A8L. He said he'd take my money all day long with regard to my request for a fluid change - he said it would be a waste of money." I'd save your money and put it towards what looks like an inevitable rebuild. That's exactly what I did under similar circumstances. MJ's advice is, as always, golden.
