I’ve driven a couple of W8 Passats, and viewed more - really wanted an estate but in the spec I wanted they were very rare (from memory about 16 auto sports spec estates in the UK when they were new!) - they’re pretty smooth, but not terribly quick given the engine size. The d2 S8 would eat it for breakfast, I suspect
They very quickly hit the point where major repairs outweighed values. Torque converters were a weakness IIRC and sensors would fail routinely so EML on was a common feature of most eBay listings 10 years ago Saloons were far more common than estates. You could pick them up for less than £3k The first owners seemed to be mainly those with several vehicles, and the estates in particular tended to lead hard lives as dog/tip run wagons without much care lavished on them I gave up looking for a good one and bought my c5 A6 3.0 quattro Sport Avant instead
