Some quick replies to some nice ideas:

ainarssems and Andrew - Given my B6 V8 just broke itself, I'm sworn off them for life now, so a B6/B7 isn't completely out of the window - but another S4 is.

Sarg - I confess, If I were ever to stray into the Merc stable, that thing would certainly tempt me but I know zip about mercs and couldnt tell a good one from a bad one if I was sat inside it, plus its just a touch pricier than I want to be I think....

I've looked at S1's, A2', A3, S3, A4 and A6's and basically they all have crap specs on them, especially the older budget ones.

So really, I'm right back round to square one where actually, an S8 makes a ton of sense.....

Fair enough, I just thought you might still have that normally-aspirated 4.2L V8 itch.....

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions and extended leather. Ski hatch retrofit. Aftermarket reversing camera. DVB-T and XCarlink now removed as redundant.
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

The Merc is all about the engine, am sure you have the sense and nous to spot a bad 'un

I might be looking for a LOW (sub-50k) mileage D3 S8 in the next 12 months, need to move house first and find one with a big enough garage.

On the 6.2 there is a headbolt issue which affected certain engine numbers. Apart from that they are pretty solid. I prefer the E Class but you will only get a decent W211, around 04-05 reg for a good one (5.4 supercharged). The 6.2 is from 06-06 onwards but the price may be a bit out of your budget.

I’m selling my 2001 D2 S8. It’s Goran’s old car. Full Hayward & Scott exhaust, HJS 100 cell cats, fresh MOT. I’m gonna be putting up a proper post for it shortly. And...it’s got an awesome number plate for an S8 (S8 LOL, all genuine letters, no fudging) which I purchased from Regtransfers for £1500 quid. The plate has already gone up in value to £1750+ according to regtransfers. Worth buying the car just for the plate.

Any good to you? It’ll be cheap and I’m keeping the plate on the car.

Based in Norfolk.

Hi mate - (was sorry to read of your troubles, and there was no need to clean it up, a problem shared is a problem halved and all)

I'm not looking to get back into a D2, definitely looking into something a bit newer. I believe I have a lovely D3 sorted, but the seller and I have busy and conflicting schedules so just trying to work logistics at the mo.

I confess though, the C63 seed that Sarg planted has taken a root or two. If i were ever to stray into the 3 pointed star arena, the C63 would be the reasion Im sure....

Get an advert on here though with some more details and a couple of photos and you may well get some interest

Nice.....But it tends to be the 4wd quattro that keeps me in the Audi camp. I do occasionally wonder about something like the Phaeton, but then you loose the lightweight audi aluminium part and most of the more modern ones are 3L barges

I still look wistfully at the old BMW 840s that i was looking for when I slipped and hit the Audi S8. Pretty, but nothing quite hits the Audi 8s for 4WD, "Light" and generally silly money for the amount of car!

VW made the unfortunate mistake of using alloy window trim on steel without a proper barrier, so all the door tops corrode. They all seem to have it. Some people had all four doors replaced under warranty but the defect is in the design, so it's just a matter of time before they go again. Shame, as I quite liked the early pre-"Blanket VW Corporate Look" ones.
