hmm, I can see that the breather hoses are also a much better design than on 2,8 where it has those nasty corrugated plastic pipes that make it easy for debris to settle on to and crack after a few years...

Regarding the wrapping of the AQH to prevent dirt ingress, i see from the engine service manual that there's a set of engine bungs available (VAS 6122) but when i checked the price they were around 100$ a set!! And you would need a few a those MJ 100$ for a set of plastic bungs is a bit steep
And, a question for you MJ - whats the differences between the AQH and AVP? I see that there's a slight difference in torque (430@3500rpm and 420@3400 respectively) ?

Mechanically nothing as far as I can tell. It seems to be all about the shift from Euro 3 to Euro 4, and the consequent change from Bosch Motronic 7.1 on the AQH to 7.1.1 on the AVP. With that comes secondary O2 sensors, individual control of the cam timing, and a warning light if secondary air isn't working. They changed the software and so also changed the engine code. BCS is the American version of the same thing, again mechanically the same but with different emissions specs. Cylinder heads, pistons, cams etc all the same so the difference in output is likely down to software.

Ironically, while the FL2 S8 got all the new Euro 4 gear, its still actually rated Euro 3 whereas the FL2 3.7 and 4.2 did achieve Euro 4. Luckily for British FL2 S8 owners though, DVLA class all the FL2 V8s as Euro 4

David - funnily enough I have a few items from that engine bung set from the two brand new engines I use

Which is why my late FL2 AVP-engine S8 is compliant with the London ULEZ.

2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

MJ, your next Mastermind question is this:
The AQH /BCS engines seem to matched with different gearbox IDs too. The AQH/BCS are attached to ECY (ZF Pt No 1058 020 013; Audi Pt No 01L 300 041S) whilst AVP/AYS are attached to FBG (always though that stood for "F*cking Big Gearbox) (ZF Pt No 1058 020 030; Audi Pt No 01L 300 042P)
Why?

Software changes again. ECY and FBG are exactly the same hardware, but with differences in the user interface - ECY has PRND432, FBG has PRNDS. You can put an ECY gearbox in an FL2 in place of an FBG and it works just fine. Likewise, you can put an FBG control unit and shifter in an FL1 with an ECY to get PRNDS (which I have done in mine and Mike's), although early FL1 clusters don't display the gear selection in the LCD as they don't understand the CAN messages.
