Personally I wouldn't put diesel in the oil as it'll thin it out and risk damaging the bearings and cam journals. Plus any carbon deposits which are in the oil ways that get loosened by the diesel will end up in the cam tensioners and kill them.
Maybe that would work on a big block Chevy or a Detroit Diesel but I wouldn't try it in a highly strung multivalve alloy V8. ATF would be a safer bet as at least is has some lubricating properties and reasonable viscosity along with significant detergent properties, so it wouldn't harm the bearings. |

V10 in a B5 A4...
Maybe with a custom front panel and some massaging of the firewall it might be possible in a D2. There's more room behind the engine in the B5 so it can all be moved back a bit, but the engine bay is shorter in the front compared to the D2. When I measured a D2 and D3 side by side I thought it was a pretty conclusive 'no', but maybe I need to measure again ![]() |

It look a fairly professional job from the pic , it must have taken a serious amount of hours and money ,

The front panel in that pic was developed to allow fitting the VR6 in to a B5 so it moves everything forward and gets rid of the bulkiness of the factory panel. Possibly with the same treatment in a D2, and losing the AC, it might fit.

Do they change transmission ,drives ,and some suspension to allow it to cope with the power and weight ,my dad had a range rover many years ago and the original petrol engine was removed and a turbo charged diesel was installed and she spent more time in the workshop that on the road ,.mainly clutch ,gearbox and leaks

That A4 is using the 01E 6-speed manual which can be fairly easily bulletproofed, and with work can take 1000hp, although yes clutches get to be a challenge at that level. However, clutches in the 500-600hp range are easily available, derived from the RS4 and related things. The B7 RS4 clutch should take the V10s 450hp easily enough.
The D3 uses the 6HP series of transmissions which are bigger and stronger, but the 6HP26 fitted to the larger engines has a completely different architecture to the 5HP in the D2 - the engines are moved back in the D3 bay by 4-5" or so to improve weight distribution, hence they can accommodate an extra cylinder. To put it in the D2 would need the 01E manual again, pushed back as far as mounts and shafts can accommodate, but because the D2 is based on the 5HP the engine can't go back anything like as far as it can in the D3 because the bulkhead and HVAC are in the way, so the room needs to be found in the front. With that much engine in front of the axle it would be an autobahn cruiser. You'd have to apply in writing to change direction ![]() |

So you would really only do it to prove that you could, even to buy a good v10 engine must be 5k + I'm guessing
