What's it worth (not a for sale ad)
Hi guys.
I haven't posted for quite some time now. You may remember nearly three years ago, the 2008 D3 4.2tdi that I'd bought a couple of month previous snapped one of the timing chains. I've still got it but never got around to sorting it. There was always something else in the way that prevented me from getting started. I finally finished paying for it at the start of last month, various other projects that were more pressing have all been finished off and I got the A8 moved around ready to get started on it. Then I got the incredibly inconvenient news that I had to vacate my rented workshop as soon as humanly possible. Within a week if possible (which it frankly isn't!). I've managed to get some workshop space on the farm that I live on but it has issues. No electricity for a start off, not big enough to comfortably fit the A8 and worst of all, an uneven cobbled floor that I couldn't safely lift the car up enough to remove the engine. In short, the workshop is fine for finishing of my project 90 land Rover (if I can get electricity or a decent generator) but the A8 will have to go. Ultimately this means the A8 has to go unless I can squeeze it into the shed somehow and still get the landy in (hugely unlikely). Obviously it can only be sold for spares/repair and likely not for very much. If I had space and time I could break it and make a tidy profit but I don't and I'm time limited. So what does the collective thinking reckon it could be worth? It's 2008, adaptive headlights, DAB, reverse camera, 20" wheels (maybe 19", I'd have to check) facelift rear lights, front fogs and wing mirrors, heavily tinted double glazed windows etc. I'll probably stick it on fleabay so suggested value would be more for a reserve price. I'm waiting on the scrappy emailing back with a price as well. Alternatively if anyone on here fancies it I'd rather it went to some use, or if you want anything off it that can be removed easily enough in the next week or so give me a shout and I'll see what I can do. (No promises though as I have a LOT of stuff to shift out of the workshop before it gets knocked down). I'm gutted not to have been able to save it myself, I really loved that car (and it was my third A8) and I'll likely never get anything as nice again.

What’s the mileage and history like? Will probably have an impact on its value as a ‘fixer upper’ for someone

It's quite high mileage, 230k km if i remember correctly. Was an Irish import. Gearbox serviced with new oil and filter every 60k. I had receipts for everything that was ever done to it, which was always at a VW dealer in Dublin. It was only used for motorway miles between Dublin and Belfast until I bought it and brought it to Scotland where it managed a couple of months before breaking one of the timing chains, the one doing the left bank.
Since then it has sat in my workshop for three years untouched while other projects have taken precedence. I'd love to keep it and get it fixed but per original post matters have been taken out of my hands unfortunately. I'm currently getting quotes from scrappies but it might still go on eBay with a starting bid of whatever the scrappy quotes and no reserve as it needs to go.

Worth putting the details into WBAC as a runner and seeing what it might fetch privately. I suspect scrapping it is the sensible option given the mileage isn’t exactly low AND it needs a shed load potentially spending on it that’s likely to exceed its value once fixed

My assumption was that any potential buyer would be parting it out rather than fixing it. The later facelift lights etc. all seem to fetch good money. First scrappy gave me a £50 offer which is insulting frankly as I could take a battered fiat Punto to my local scrappy for £150 minimum. Waiting on a specialist salvager getting back. If the price he offers is ridiculous as well, I'll maybe just strip off as many small high value parts as possible in the time I've got and have the rest weighed in

I hadn't even thought of the forum sponsor to be honest. I'll give them a try.
I've been offered £250 from scrapacar Scotland, which is low by any standards. The specialist salvager offered £400, which I'm surprised at to be honest, the same company paid £700 for a non runner D2 about two years ago and the price of scrap has rocketed since. The question is, do I go for the low ball amount and strip as much as possible off the car and make up my money that way, maybe, over time or just go for the higher but still pretty low £400 (given the value of the parts once broken). A quick look online suggests about £250-350 for the facelift rear LEDs for instance, similar for the adaptive headlights and so on. I'm well aware that I could be holding on to a huge pile of bits that could potentially take years to shift though. It's a bit disheartening when I have been paying nearly as much as the top offer every month for the last three years just for the honour of having it sat broken in my shed

D2 petrol has cats that have lot of precious metals that can be recovered but a lot less in D3 diesel cats/dpfs. When my D2 failed gearbox I made the deal with forum sponsors that I am keeping cats and wheels, put on cheap £40 set of wheels so that it can be rolled on trailer and they paid me £500. I then sold cats for scrap for £340
