Nothing better that the joy of Oil Leak hunting.
Afternoon all,
Working on the car today and thought I would take a look at an oil leak that's been getting worse. Not driven the car much but it looks like I have a leak at the back of the engine, missing the under tray and dripping onto the ground. Its stopping the sub frame getting too rusty I suppose! Time to clean it all off and have a look where its coming from. Not sure if its gearbox but it looks like it or something at the back of the engine that's flowing down to there.

That looks like the left hand output flange - a very common spot for leaks. Can you identify gear oil by smell? Engine oil is not unpleasant, slightly petroly smell. By comparison, gear oil is a vile pungent stench which gets in your nose for hours. ATF is a bit fishy.
The usual culprit for engine oil leaks down the back is the valley gasket. It fills the V with oil which then dribbles out of a vent hole at the back of the bellhousing, down behind the flexplate and out of the bottom. |
