There is no point putting anything on top of a crusty surface, but if you spend the time cleaning the rust off and apply Lanoguard as per instructions it will preserve the underside for many years to come
This is before and after cleaning of my old Volvo two years ago. There was no rust just 23 years of dirt accumulation. Cleaned with soapy water, turpentine, brushes, plenty cloths then when clean apply Chemical Guys Bare Bones to finish it off This is after Lanoguard was applied this year (2 years after cleaning)

this Lanoguard looks interesting
ps what volvo have you got? i have a soft spot for them in the old days i used to service all my bosses cars 144 145 164 244 265 models

It will be a tough mission to find one as good as this Roberto, there are a lot of nice ones out there but very few of this quality left now.
I've owned the car since March 2020 but due to Covid restrictions I've only started taking it to shows this year and the majority of people think it's just another 'old Volvo' but those who know their Volvos appreciate exactly how rare it is. I've already got a list of people who want to buy it from me whenever I am prepared to sell
