he did mention the cat has been removed years ago as it was rattling and the engine management system fault has been programmed out. im not sure if this will cause issues with MOT?

For me that would be a massive red flag. Am I wrong here or does no catts mean not legal? If that's the case then you will be at the mercy of a friendly and also corrupt Mot tester for the rest of your ownership.

It also stinks to me of shortcuts being taken.

Mine was rattling when I bought the car, something else I missed during my test drive. I have had it replaced with a good used unit.

Be very careful.

"The cat"? There are two....
Mine was rattling on one side when I bought car (replacement priced in) but it sailed through an MOT when properly warmed up.
When I did get the failed cat replaced I was told that there was effectively nothing left inside it so the exchange process returned a metal pipe!

2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (Even rarer than a D2 S8!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. Agate Grey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, Tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon. Added Auto-dim mirror, Leather seats, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I'll be honest, this is a red flag for me, if he is chums with MR MOT then it wont get picked up. I am prepared to walk away today, booked a return ticket back to london!

Yay!!
You've now scratched that V8 itch that you talked about in your opening post

Now hurry up and flog it before it bankrupts you!
(only joking).

And a nice saving on what you were expecting to pay too.
I'm sure you're already polishing your camera lens to take all the photos that we expect to see here when a member brings home a new baby.

Edit: I've just noticed that my post number today is 666! I hope that isn't bringing bad luck

At last! I do hope it's everything you want it to be: I still remember my drive back from Harrogate from IT's with Herman (my S8) way back in 2009 (show photo attached, just 'cos I could...): I didn't know cars could be that smooth or good. And I still have him, which tells you something.

Usual request: photos please! (when you're ready... ). Enjoy...
