Default pf a8 delight to drive

For the past few weeks I ve been using the s4 for work.....but this week I decided to take the a8.....so far this week been to Trowbridge and Kettering from Coventry.....

I have to say even though it is now 13 yrs old....and sometimes plays funny buggers with the gearbox....it just cruises so well....and the seats are so comfortable....love the little extension bit on the seat under the knees....

But i think the best thing about these cars is the fact they hold the road in any weather condition and to the unaware there is so much hidden power.....(had an annoying peugeot diesel driver come up behind and start flashing his lights in heavy third lane traffic....to which i quite happily obliged by slowing down a little and when the traffic cleared...put my foot down and left him sitting still)

I bought the car a year ago with lpg for 2.5k....spent 1500 here and there with mods and maintenance....and its given me 25000 miles of joy....every so often i think let it go and get a newer diesel....but then I think for what I d get in return in terms of price for this now and what i would have to pay to get similar joy and comfort....I just cant move on....

So in short....so glad audi made this car from aluminium cos there isnt much out there which compares to the a8 even after a decade of new technology!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd agree... The D3 is lovely, but I do miss the D2, there was something just right about it.

I had a TDi A6 try to burn me off on the A82 Renton by-pass this morning (a long, pretty straight dual carriageway for those not from these parts).

Anyone like to guess who won?

I love my S8 too - even though the b****y engine management light has come back on again!). It can't be yet another cat - surely?

Damn right!

I sold my old pre FL A8 and bought a FL S8.

The S8 is very nice but, with its longer gearing the old A8 was nicer still.

Can't kep 'em all I suppose and they guy who bought my 97 A8 thinks it's the best car he's ever had.

Just wish the petrol was cheaper, but hey.

Sit in a Merc S Class or Jag XJ from the same generation and you will love the D2 even more. The Merc and Jag aren't even half the car. They feel cheap, plastic and dated, nowhere near the same amount of power and of course as they aren't aluminium they will be rotting away, good riddance.
Long live the D2 and all those who keep 'um running.

When Jaguar went aluminium on the XJ circa 2002, they still didn't get it right. You just have to look at most of those examples to see corrosion where they have allowed steel and aluminum to meet on the hinges
