Default RNS-D navigation unit for sale from 2002 A8 D2

Hi Everyone,

I've got my RNS-D (aka Navigation Plus) unit for sale. Unit is in mint condition, has no single scratch on screen or plastic front plate and has no signs of wear, though it was installed in my 2002 D2 FL car from new.

I can also include TMC module if requested, but if you're just swapping your faulty RNS-D unit with a working one you don't need TMC module as it is already installed in your car. If you're retrofitting RNS-D to a car which had no RNS-D navigation before you will need TMC unit.

There was werid situation with the unit: during this winter's arctic period I once coldstarted the car, switched on the unit and it refused to read CD claiming the CD is not TravelPilot DX type of CD. When I warmed up the car the unit worked fine. Similar problem was discussed in this forum: http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1073. I noticed this with my unit only once during cold winter period.

The reason why I sell the unit is because I recently upgraded to RNS-E.

I can't supply any wiring harnesses since exisitng wiring was used in RNS-E installation.

Please PM me offers above 100 pounds. Pickup is preferred (I'm based in Reading area), but I can post the unit anywhere in the world (postage is not included).

Here is a picture of the unit in the car, though I understand it is impossible to judge about condition of the unit. Please let me know if you want high resolution pictures.

P.S. The unit comes with CD of Great Britain

Thanks!

I decided to use this RNS-D in another project for a couple of months, so I'm suspending selling it.

I'll let you know when the unit becomes available again.

Sorry for this confusing thread.

This unit is for sale again.

The reason why I had to pause selling this unit is because we started project with Bjarne (the inventor of CANGATE) hopefully to enable DIS instructions for those who upgrade to RNS-E. In order to do this, I've performed some CAN message traffic logging between this unit and instruments cluster, in order to 'understand' communication protocol used between the two units. The project didn't finish yet, but no more RNS-D logging required, so the unit is for sale again.

Two pictures of the unit: Cosmetically, it is in ideal condition. Same price, 100 pounds.

P.S. A small shiny box on the second picture is TMC unit if you need it.

What will I need to buy to install this in my s8 with nav but not nav plus? My Audi symphony is getting tired and I'd like a display screen. I'm not sure if I'll even hookup/use the nav since I've lived in this city 20 years

I'm not sure what exactly you need to buy as I don't know wiring for cars with nav, but without nav plus.

I would suggest to get ELSA software and it has wiring diagrams, so you can compare and see the delta between cars with nav and nav plus.

I did the same thing when I have upgraded from nav plus to RNS-E

How did you get on with the DIS Info project with Bjarne?

Are we any closer to finding a solution...been waiting years for this!

Thanks & kind regards,

The fundamental problem is that RNS-E do not put the graphical information into can bus when it is talking to A8 cluster. This is why we see empty graphics screen.

This happens because RNS-E software has not been tested to work with A8 cluster. Most probably during handshake procedure RNS-E receives a message from A8 cluster that it doesn't expect. This confuses RNS-E and it stops communicating.

Because CANGATE sits between cluster and RNS-E the idea was to catch A8 messages from cluster and substitute them with RNS-E friendly "A6" type of messages. But in order to accomplish this project you need to study protocol in detail and find the confusing message, which is kind of searching needle in a hay.

We have full dump of communication between RNS-E and A8 cluster from the powerup moment until the cluster displays empy screen and we also have full dump of communication between RNS-E and A6 cluster from powerup moment until the cluster displays first graphical picture, but we failed to analyse where the difference is.
