Funny enough that's what the gearbox place said, and then they went on to say "there aren't any decent automatic 'boxes out there at the moment".

The problematic ZF tip is the only slur in the otherwise perfect D2. A rebuild is good, if the car is for short term (2-3 years) ownership. If your D2 is more of a long term ownership car, 3 years and beyond, a manual conversion (with its cost implications) is a great idea.

I've been looking at starting mine now, just awaiting my pedal box (custom) to be completed, and hopefully, if the weather's still as good as it is now, teardown would begin. I don't want to be working on my car so close to winter, otherwise.

Good luck with your rebuild, buddy.

That's an awesome article you found there, bud. Personally, I have no faith in the ZF units, I have had pals with Jaguar and BMW ZF units fail. One was 2 weeks after being serviced by a ZF specialist, with the correct fluid.

It would appear fluid changes on a tranny with over a 100,000 miles without ever been serviced, could do more harm than good, due to dislodging benign deposits, which end up clogging control valves. Think of it as a blood clot breaking free and clogging up a main artery, causing you to have a stroke.

I guess owners will have to make their own choices.

Thanks for the good wishes: the rebuild will be easy, the payment will be painful!

I've added the ZF statement to the sticky at the top of the section - good find and good to have it for reference, so thanks
Ive had the gearbox in mine replaced just over a year ago so I know your pain! I plumped for the VAG service exchange unit which came with new everything and even had oil already in it, but you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be doing a flush/replace oil service every 30.000 miles or so in the hope of never having to pay that kind of money out again on it!

Mine is off for a gearbox service next week as it's 'whooping' on changedowns.

But then again, I'm saving up for a service on the Volvo soon too as the Aisin-Warner box on that has some niggles too.
