Had one of the A8s for about 7 years now, the other was dirt cheap and local with the bits we wanted to change on the first one. Seen a few S8s but have a particular spec in mind and havent found one that fits.

You could try Mackies in Glasgow, they're a ZF specialist, but probably a similar price

Personally, I'd find it difficult to justify throwing 2500 - £3000 on a car worth about £4500.

Actually, scrub that. If my ZF went bust and I had no other option to get her back on the road, I'd part her out, add the proceeds to the £3000 repair bill and get something else. I like automobile, but definitely don't love them. An automobile can ruin you, if you allow it to.

That's just me guys, others will have different views when it comes to dealing with money pits.

IMHO the only way to look at major component failure is "can i find a car as good as the one i have now for less/same as the repair". For example to find one with the same mileage and spec as mine currently has will cost more than the repair (just) and I also know mine is in good shape (cambelt, tyres and rad are all shiny and new) so if mine goes pop it would be fixed (the gearbag's been serviced so I'm hoping it won't) however another year or so down the line? sadly it'll be pushing up daisies. 2.5k on a 4k car i know is in otherwise good shape.....a bill i'd pay everytime! 2.5k on a car worth 2k at best.......bye bye car! As a well known desert rodent once said....simples!

JUst seen this company advertising - I have no idea who they are or how good they are, but their website suggests they know what they're doing!

Had mine done for about £1,500. I used VMTP gearboxes in Derby. Google VMTP.
