Long brake pedal
At least that's what my ex-garage-owner mate who just had a look says I should describe the problem as.
The brakes on my 1998 S8 feel pretty soft and not wonderfully effective; you have to push hard and a long way to get a rapid stop. No warnings. My tame "expert" had a quick look and said, yes not working as they should, need attention sooner rather than later. He did confirm that the rear pads were new (done late last year) and fronts had loads left. No signs of any leaks and the reservoir is full. His opinion is that it was probably an internal leak in the master cylinder and that replacing it as a unit was the most likely solution. Does anyone have a view on whether that is likely and if so how big a job is it and how much for parts and labour at an independent Audi specialist? Thanks in advance.

Also how old is the fluid and when was it last changed? Brake fluid is recommended for a change every couple of years these days.

Fluid was changed at the last service, when the rear pads were fitted.
(along with a load of other stuff that was done - t'was expensive!) Also the brakes were fine a couple of weeks ago when I last drove it.

Well, the latest news I have is quite concerning.....
Having replaced the master cylinder and while working on bleeding the brakes they have found: Both front brakes INNNER brake pads have lost the material! Only backing left, the blocks have come off (not worn away).  Now these pads were replaced about 2 years ago by this same garage, and I've not done a lot of mileage since. So, here are my first thoughts: 1. Should they have noticed this while checking for problems? 2. Would the pedal be "soft" as a result of this or could I genuinely have had a master cylinder problem as well? I feel an interesting "discussion" coming on with the management....

Definitely an interesting discussion... While the pads could simply have failed, it could be a sticky piston causing them to wear prematurely.
Either way, they should have spotted that long before suggesting any other parts!!

They haven't worn, the pad material has gone totally - broken away from the backing material.
Cheap chinese fakes maybe?

Can't understand how they can consider they've done a proper investigation if they missed that until they were putting it back together
If they don't agree the master cylinder wasn't faulty ask them to give you the old one and get it checked professionally. Make sure they don't have an opportunity to fiddle with it first.... Otherwise ask them to refit the old one and pay for replacement pads
