Bloody ell you lot are showing your ages .... But I seem to remember isopon

Before Isopon there was a product called Auto Ballons (not sure if that's the correct spelling) which looked almost like feathers and a resin which you applied to the damaged area to fill in the holes.


What about the old chicken wire bodge to fill in the gaps before covering with Isopon

Dare I own up to superglue, sandpaper, toothpaste and nail polish to "repair" and smooth a "lightly-damaged" Greek hire car a few years ago.
(followed by driving around a dusty patch for a fair while)

never did the chicken wire but did do newspaper a few times

My brother in law bought a Ford Consul of the late 50s early 60s era, at the time it would have been around 8 years old and he always wondered why the doors were so heavy on it, until one day when he slammed it shut the plaster of paris fell onto the road

Plastic Padding came with its own chicken wire.
I have repaired cars in such an advanced state of decay that I can claim to be a sculptor.
Underseal could not easily be removed from the hair

P40 was wonderful stuff, but a swine to get off your fingers!
Always smoothed it down (after newspaper/ chicken wire/ whatever I could lay my hands on) with a plastic bag, & left cling film over it (smooth surface - less sanding)
Much better than having to mix up A & B resin & soaking it up into fibreglass matting, which I did before the advent of P40/ isopon/ plastic padding
My better cars were repaired with lead....... now that's a dying art.

(I fully understand Ton up kid's comments re sculpture, my piece de resistance was on a Mk 1 flat bonnet Capri, being quite tall the only Capri I could just about get a reasonably comfortable driving position, my head clear of the roof with a reclining seat & extended wheel boss!)

Wouldn't dream of bodging steering or brakes though

Yep. Fixed my Capri exhaust with a Heinz Baked Bean can.
Somehow a Red Bull can seems better

Using quailty beans there as well no the cheap ones, even for car repair

I had a hired a brand new BMW 1 series in spain a few years ago, just after the 1 series went on sale. Whilst parked one night on the street, the car was keyed on 2 panels. Luckily the car was black, so we took it to a car wash to get it clean and then the repair commenced. Visited local shop, purchased a pack of wax crayons and a black felt tip pen. The wax crayon did not work, however after using the felt tip pen you would never have known it was scratched. After driving around for another 7 days, it was impossible to see the fix. Car was returned and inspected, nothing found and back I came to the UK.
