RNS-D goes crazy? Says No Changer/Disk

are there not two lasers? one for the nav cd in the head unit and one in the changer in the boot/trunk, I kinda suspect it might have something to do with the "reflash"

The changer in the trunk/boot works fine.

It even works fine when the head unit is saying it's dead....

The RNS e looks nice, but dang, they are not the same plugs, so I'd have to wire it up, and the one's I have seen at 1200.00 USD are way overpriced.

I can get a nice non nav eqipped Kenwood 7" dual DIN head unit that will do GPS via my smart phone, does bluetooth and has tons of other nice features.

But I lose the center gauge view I think, but I've been told that it's possible there is an adapter for the CAN system, and I might be able to wire up the S8's shifter buttons to control volume up/down, and track up/down. (That would be used WAY more than shifting that I can do via the selector if I want to drive it manually.)
