Default Car Salesmen

My son was looking for a car for his partner. She hates the VW Sharan she has and always loved the BMW X5s they've had before. 4 kids so they need a 7 seater.

Son phoned his pal at the local BMW dealer to be told 7 seat X5s are hen's teeth - could sell them all day etc., etc. He gets info on year/prices etc.

So they go to the Volvo Dealer to look at what they might have as his brother has an XC 60 and likes it fine.

He sees an X5 outside, colour right 3 litre diesel so he goes for a wee look and reckons it's a 7 seater!

They go in, 5:30 on a wet Saturday afternoon, 3 salesmen all sitting round one desk.

David goes over and says straight out. "You lot look well ****ed off, anyone done a deal today?"

The answer is no so David asks "who wants one then?"

They all do but they have their pecking order so.....

What's that X5 BMW outside?

Oh, it's just a 5 seat X5, pretty basic etc., etc.

David asks for the keys and goes out for a look. Salesman doesn't even go along!

Turns out it's a 7 seater with Sat Nav, Heated seats and loads of other extras not noted on the sales bumph.

David realises the Salesman/Dealership doesn't know what he's selling so after a bit of haggling he strikes a deal at about £5 less than it should be selling for, remember his mate did give him price guidelines.

Amazing how these guys don't know what they have in stock

Salesmen/saleswomen don't know their ar5e from their elbow. Anything our of the ordinary has them stumped, you just need to read the adverts where they say 'fully loaded' 'every conceivable extra' and you know they are a bunch of chancers

They probably based the price they paid to the previous owner on what they believed, so if anyone ended up worse off its going to be the previous owners. The dealer would have made the same margin based on what they believe.

Just re-read my Post. It should read "about £5K less..."

David sold cars for a few years in his formative years before he got a real job!

The X5 in question was probably an ex company purchase so they didn't haggle on the trade in they got or it was possibly on a Lease deal anyway.

As David said "I always knew what I was taking in and selling on. No way would I have let a gem like that slip through my fingers!"

That Dealership was a Volvo outlet so was much more interested in the New Cars going out to meet Targets than the trade ins.

Their loss, his gain.

I've worked many trade shows over the years. You're there to sell and you need to sell to keep your business afloat, but sometimes you get those days when there's sod all happening.
You start out trying to look busy
You go through all the new stuff, prices etc with your salesforce, but eventually the whole thing just sort of winds down and in the end you're all sitting there bored out your brains.
At this point some inconsiderate would be customer rocks up. And it becomes a real struggle to get enthusiastic. You kind of wish they'd shove off

I think I know how those guys felt. You just get days like that
