I suppose you could take off intake and exhaust connections and check how oily they are and how much play is in the shaft but being unfamiliar with 4.2's I would imagine it's quite poor access and fair amount of work to get there.

If I had blown turbos instead of buying new from dealer I would send old ones for rebuild and ask them to make hybrids out of them, machine the housing if there is enough spare metal and fit bigger wheels. It would need a remap afterwards but should provide nice boost in power. The units you will get from dealer will most likely be rebuilds any way and rebuild to standard spec but if you go for rebuild yourself you can probably get upgraded bearings and seals fitted which will last longer. Not to mention it will be cheaper as well.
