cleared the code on gearbox, took it out for a run around the block,
goes into d and gives a little tug as to say it was engaged, so i set off, it revs and clunks into limp, so took it around the block, got back and plugged the laptop in and using vagcom got the codes: g28 engine speed sensor implausable intermittant incorrect gear ratio so thinking logically about this, the trans and engine need to know what they are doing to match clutching to rpm? and the way i am thinking about it is if the trans doesnt know what rpm the engine is doing it cant engage as it cant see if the engine is at idle or say 2k? or am i just clutching at straws? any advice would be great as i have no idea about auto transmissions |

Well 2 problems at once is always tricky, but go for the easiest/cheapest first.

it's ****ed - budget on a rebuild. The engine management isn't that clever - it's just seeing implausible numbers that don't match because the engine is revving, the speed is too low for the revs, most likely because something in the box isn't engaging properly so think torque converter or something else internal to the gearbox
Sorry ![]()

ah so based on that (right or wrong) the fact it engages and feels like the clutch slipping then the clunk and limp can possably say some sort of clutch is fubar :S
great... i wouldnt mind if i had absloutly spanked the car and abused it, i could expect it to go wrong then... like the 2 answers though lol Last edited by chie; 15th November 2012 at 06:15 PM. |

Not really, a speed sensor is a speed sensor.
If it's on the engine clear it (if you haven't before) and see if it returns. Whether it affects the gearbox I've no idea.

How long ago did you purchase it? A friend of mine bought FTO and after couple of moth engine gave up, dealer refused to do anything but after complaint to consumer protection or whatever it is called they paid for a second hand engine to be installed.
