Gearbox replacement authorised by Santa (too big to fit down the chimney ). Probably heading to Mackie's tomorrow to get them to do it - 100k and 3 year warranty swung it over a 2 year warranty from Audi at more than twice the price.

Just deciding whether I'm comfortable driving the s8 the 220 miles to Glasgow to have this done....

219 of these miles are motorway, which I'll do after the rush hour, so hopefully it'll behave - and I'll call out the RAC if it starts playing up

Wish me luck (or tell me I'm mad...)

Glad to hear youve got a solution sorted, and the Guarantee sounds very good indeed. I think the Audi warranty was 2 years unlimited mileage so youve got to do some miles either way! Hope you get it up and running again soon, I know your pain toooo well lol

Drive it. It'll likely get there just fine.

Even if you hit a problem, worst case its limp mode for a bit, and 3rd gear on the motorway isnt that bad.....

Pull over, switch off and restart and it'll likely last a bit longer.

Be helpful if you have AA/RAC cover just in case the very, very worst happens but I dont recall ever driving a D2 that couldnt engage at least limp mode.

...safely delivered to John @ Mackies in Glasgow an hour ago, no drama, 3 hours door to door, I've never used my right foot so gently ( and 24 mpg - unheard of for me!).

Brian - towing wasn't really an option - too far, too short notice, and I really wanted to drop the car myself.

Looking forward to getting it back already - I will just need to make do with my Fiat Coupe in the meantime, which isn't a great hardship.

Thanks to all for the helpful advice over the last couple of weeks, really useful in having some good choices, and making an informed decision

Even transport to Mackie's from the station, perhaps. I work not too far away and could probably 'disappear' for an hour if you let me know when

Cheers guys, I'm back in the centre of town now, reacquainting myself with the sights, sounds and colour of Glesga' bars - always good to be back. Catching the late (£13!) train back to Manchester at about 8pm, back up in about 10 days to collect my car then...
