Back in the old days it was the sort of thing you got when the engine was "flooded" after not starting for whatever reason.
The solution was to floor the accelerator and turn it over (often with jump leads from a car with engine running) for a longish time until it eventually "caught" and chugged into life.

I was assuming it had flooded when it made the failed start on the monday am, but it sat for the better part of 4 days (plenty of time to dry out) and didn't start and had new shiny dry clean plugs and still didn't start. My only other option is the battery was a mite weak and that was stopping it from starting but the engine was spinning over plenty quick enough. I have had cars barely capable of turning over and jumping into action, but perhaps the voltage has to be much higher for the ecu whilst the engine can still turn? Anyone know if the ecu is so tetchy?

I don't know how much juice is needed but i also have have enough power to turn over but not enough for her to run, replaced battery and all was ok. It could be with the cold the battery is struggling and with your pack on it for a while was enough. Fingers crossed, can you borrow a battery from someone just to try?
My fuel pump did play me around before it failed completely, very similar too with the lumpy running and missing then it would clear and run fine.

Hmmmmmmm. No one i know has anything like such a massive car/battery that I could borrow, my friends/family all pottle round In weezy ecoboxes. It might be worth sticking the battery on a weekend long trickle charge, make sure it's topped right up. It never sounds like its struggling but if yours turned over and wouldn't go it might be the cause. Warmer weather coming up can only help if the battery is getting a touch decrepit.

Modern vehicles need massive amounts of battery power to keep up with all the electronics in them. Might be worth having the battery checked if it's over 3 years old as they tend to have less output by this age

I just used a trickle charger for several hours not a full blown charger but it hasn't got a gauge so can't see what it's taken. It has however run like a new one without a hint of problem including a -4 start this morning. In fairness the battery was spinning the engine for 2 days of trying so it can't be too flimsy!
