Yes, I gave up on these for the same reason, but David has just installed some different ones, so we'll await his experience

I've found some that work well in my Focus, after similar initial problems.
The issue with the Focus is that the sidelight bulb is very close to the dip/main bulb and apparently heat damages the LED's quite quickly.
See attached picture for the type I bought (CANBUS as it happens, though not necessary).

I haven't looked at fitting them to the new S8, offhand what bulb type are they and are they easy to swap? On the PF model with Xenons it's was a major mission to get at them so I left well alone.

As The Laird is aware, the 5 LED ones I fitted required a little bit of surgery to the hole through which they project into the reflector housing as the distance across the diagonals (being flat sided) is greater than the diameter of the glass lamp. Literally a matter of a square peg in a round hole. As I had dismantled the whole assembly for cleaning (as per Iyoles excellent guidance - see other thread), it was an easy matter with a file. Trying to do it in situ would leave a lot of plastic filings within the light assembly.

The sidelight colour now matches the headlights! ... though the main beam H7s even with the Philips x-treme "100% extra" are still very halogen yellow..

I found some for my PF S8 that were a very good match and quite a few years ago too. Don't have any details any more but I'm sure I posted something here about it a while back.

Edit: Isn't "search" wonderful, I wrote:

Of course they're not that colour still being yellower than the HID which are probably around 4500K, but they're not bad.

Thanks, similar to some of my interior bulbs.

Funny thing is there's no information in the drivers manual, but a well-known bulbs web site suggests wedge 501 bulbs for sidelights and H9's for the main beams with Xenons.

I'll need to have a look to be sure.

With regards to the sidelights it would appear that there is random fit of 501s or 434 offset bayonet on FL cars. Best to check.

All 3 of my '8s have had off-set bayonet side lights, but all were 2002 models

Thanks, you're right, I have offset bayonet bulbs, and as noted by others the holes are pretty tight!
Main beams look like H7's too, though I didn't actually take one out. 2 pin connector pointing straight back (H9's have a right-angle).
