Tesco Momentum is a fantastic fuel, much better than BP Ultimate and considered better than V Power by most. Shell V Power Nitro or Momentum is all my car ever gets.

I put it like that as many (see endless debates on other forum) state that they would not put ANY Tesco fuel in their cars - even Momentum. I certainly have no problem with it - especially at 10p a litre off.
Some are worried about the high levels of ethanol (5%) and methanol (3%) in the fuel though for what reasons I am not sure.

VPower uses Ethanol, too. There is no getting away from it, I believe that fuel companies are being forced to use it, some green BS.

well been running on this new V-Power a few days now, absolutely no scientific proof but car seems more responsive, smoother power delivery and feels generally more suited to this than normal 95 stuff. As expected because of my extra spirited driving to test out the theory my consumption has gone through the floor, saw a 15 in the DIS for the first time ever

Guys, don't quote me. But a D2 A8/S8 shouldn't be run on 95 RON. Audi recommend 98 RON, or - at a compromise, '95 RON Super/Premium'. This will give reduced power versus the optimum 98 RON. Have a read through your owners' manuals, as I haven't got mine to hand (yes, I'm still a D2 S8 owner technically), and in any case, my D2's only ever got V Power (99 RON).

It will run on almost anything sold as petrol but you won't get the best performance unless you're around 98/99RON.
My FL S8 manual says it can be run on 91RON as an emergency measure and driven gently, but to fill up with 95 or 98 ASAP. (can't recall the PF 32V S8 wording but IIRC it was less restrictive)

Well, I'm starting a 3 week comparison of Shell V Power Nitro (still makes me laugh!) vs BP Ultimate.
I took a detour to a Shell station last night and wasn't surprised that I wasn't greeted by forecourt staff carrying 10p per litre vouchers. Nor was I surprised when the cashier looked at the 5p voucher like it were a lost Egyptian scroll. So I paid the full £1.399 p/L and put in 73.26 litres. ![]() Now, I have well over a year's worth of data on fuel consumption in my car, covering every single top-up since I bought it. And it's almost always BP Ultimate. So, for well over 22K miles, it's averaged 21.20 mpg (from the odometer and pump volume, not the DIS computer). My weekly use of the car is pretty much the same week in and week out: 5 days to the office on the A82/M8; a couple of runs after work to the pool; and a single run into Glasgow for an evening class (a creature of habit indeed! ![]() And I use pretty much a tankful a week over around 350 miles. Let's wait and see!

I've got similar amounts of fuel economy data, but my use varies far more so not easy to pick a typical week of use to compare. I don't think I've ever seen a tank average that high in mine ![]() My '8 runs fine on 95 octane BUT at the expense of grunt. You can tell the ECU has changed fuel maps onto a lower profile to suit the fuel. A quality 95 octane fuel shouldn't cause problems - I suspect the vast majority in this country will have spent a long time running on it as higher octane fuels were quite a late arrival here as we had leaded fuel for so much longer than mainland Europe so there wasn't the spare pump capacity. Even when we did people baulked at the extra expense.

Maybe someones mentioned this already, but folk should know that the RON numbers are legal minimums. Invariably the fuel is of better than posted quality and you can discover its actual RON from the fuel companies by phone.
Reason I know this is I used to have a Quattro (WR engine) and it really needed 97 or 98 Octane. Seemed to run fine on 95, but as the car had no knock sensor (unlike the later MB & RR engined ones) I was worried about it detonating. I contacted Shell (I think) and the told me the actual RON number of my local fuel (at various specific sites) and it was always around 97 or 98. There are losses in shipping, decanting and storage, so they always make it better than 95. If they produced it at 95, a small deterioration would render it substandard. So, the stuff you get may be better than you expect. I only checked the 95 RON stuff, but it might be worth contacting a fuel manufacturer and having a chat for those who are really interested in this. |
