Well fuel delivery unit definitely has been replaced before, there was a (stock) number painted on it, there was also unusual level of corrosion on pump terminals and filter mesh. So I would say that it has been in storage for a long time or in unsuitable environment which caused corrosion. My best guess would be that pump inside was corroded as well which caused it to work sometimes and not others and also introduced extra resistance and caused it to draw extra current blowing fuse. When I got to it it was open circuit, probably burned motor coil because of extra current flowing through it.

As far as taxing goes you can go to local DVLA office and tax it straight away as long as you have insurance and MOT. You will need to apply for new logbook at the same time and if you have not got green slip from old logbook it will cost you £21 extra. V5 or taxing is not a proof of ownership. V5 is for registered keeper, it does not prove ownership, if anybody is happy to take responsibility and pay tax DVLA does not have anything against it.

Have they relaxed it in recent years? I can recall it being a major pain in the bum when they introduced continuous registration and taxation when buying at auction as no reg doc basically meant parking the car up until the reg doc arrived back with you before you could then tax it

Good news it's sorted - did the pump etc get replaced again with a new one this time?

First time I did it was about 8 years ago and I know somebody who did it last summer.

Absolutely. I won't cut corners. I'm even going to change the brand new budget tyres on it for proper ones. If the ex owner had fitted a new pump the first time himself, he wouldn't have had to sell the car off as a 'non start spares and repair'.

Makes you realise how easy it is for otherwise perfectly good cars to end up getting broken for spares due to a badly diagnosed or repaired fault.

Bit of back to back driving with its younger brother today. Including a drag race.

Guess which was quicker?
