Across Europe, the service is free and widely available. In the UK however its a stupid license based system broadcast via Classic Fm, which is why you pay quite a bit extra for a TMC enabled Navigation disc. The RNS-D (2000 ish onwards) supports TMC, the RNS-C cannot. The RNS-D doesnt support it natively, it requires an external TMC receiver, which is present, albeit by accident really. The TMC module has a useful feature in that it has two canbus connections, and it can talk 'Audi' Canbus and 'Bosch' canbus. The RNS-D only talks Bosch canbus, and cannot talk directly to the instrument cluster for the purposes of turn-by-turn directions, radio station info etc. The TMC module was therefore installed a simple fudge to get everything talking, but also Audi installed an aerial loop, so the FM radio goes through the TMC module and then into the back of the Sat Nav, so the TMC module, although not designed to be used, does also have an aerial feed. So, to cut a long story short, if you simply aquire a TMC enabled Travelpilot DX nav disc for a D2 with the RNS-D, TMC will work, but it can be a little flakey, which i guess why Audi never really released it. Every once in a while it seems to get confused on the re-routing an claim there is no viable route to your destination, which is annoying, but is probably outweighed by the benefit of being able to see what traffic problems are coming up... Hope that helps

Hi Ian
Thanks for the help. I am now in the market for a disc with later mapping than the one that came with my 2002, with TMC enabled. If anyone's selling, let me know. Amar. Apols for hijacking your thread |

Have now come to the decision to keep the S8. I went to get a magazine from the local Tesco (10 min drive away) for my sister and came back an hour later after a blast up some country lanes/motorway, I loved it. Even though it was soaking wet it went around roundabouts twice the speed the 335 could even dream off. Got a drive to Manchester airport on Saturday to pick up some relatives and I'm taking the S8, can't wait
BUT - I'm going to treat it to something like full leather/solar or that alcantra headlining that A8 Parts have to sweeten it up a little. Thanks for your advice, you made me see sense! Its a great car, it really is and I don't want to buy a dog that ends up costing me more in the end. Sod the MPG too. It just means less expense on the missus

Amar, I very much doubt that mate........
A man's plans rarely tally with his woman's interpretation! We all know they run rings round us! I agree that you should keep the S8. I've spent a lot on my S8 now and I really feel that it's the "devil I know" I took an S5 out last week and started thinking about the cost vs fun ratio, then drove my trusty S8 home and had already decided to keep her before I pulled in to the drive. Having Ben fettle with your car inspires a great deal of confidence too - she's in good hands. |
