Says it all really. Something has suddenly and for no apparent reason decide to rattle behind the dashboard on the passenger side above and behind the glovebox area. I've checked all the plastic trim bulkhead side including the ecu box, scuttle trim and around the radiator bottle. All is well. I have checked the under tray and all is well. I have removed the glovebox and had a peek behind/above it and all appears normal nothing loose, wobbly or otherwise falling off. The noise occurs over bumps at low speed such as a pothole or speed humps all the time including when braking and steering and sounds like something plastic rattling (not heavy, clunky, tinny or vibratey) as opposed to suspension arms giving up the ghost. I had a quick grab on the upper suspension arms that I could reach without jacking up and taking the wheel off and they are absolutely solid with no movement at all. The suspension when giving a "bump" test pushing up and down gives no noise. Low speed moving makes no noise (going gently up a lowered kerb for example) and once at normal main road speeds there's no noise. What's above the alloy beam behind the glove box? What else could be plastic rattling in a dashboard area near the passenger windscreen pillar? And how does the upper vent cover come out so I can see if anything has dropped inside the damn thing! The rattle is beginning to affect my calm sedate manner and I would like to find the irritating and surprisingly loud rattle before I begin using rude words

Might be worth checking the suspension / ns wheel assemblies. I stripped out the whole passenger side of a D2 once to track down a rattle that 'definitely from just behind there' and it turned out to be a loose droplink or something equally simple to fix....

I pulled on the various lower gubbins when I checked the belly tray, it was all solid. I might have to take the wheel off and get grubby to have a serious attack at them but everything on cursory inspect was tickety boo. It isn't a metal rattle noise, it sounds like a screwdriver sat on the dash but obviously isn't, damn things got me stumped though!

I've got exactly the same rattle and have not been able to track it down.
Seems to sound like a short pencil rolling backwards and forwards behind the dash. Please let me know if you find the source and solution. Thanks David ![]()

Also have exactly the same sound on the D2 S8 I've just bought.
Previous owner assured me it was the engine undertray not affixed properly and that the sound was caused by contraction and expansion due to heat from the engine. I'm not convinced but it does seem speed related i.e. It only occurs at low speeds when there isn't enough air flow under the car to hold it in place. Will ask the garage to take a look when I take it for an MOT next month. Would be interested in any thoughts in the meantime though. |
