Light will not flicker, if it detects brake in circuit it will come on and remain on until ignition is switched off and off again even if circuit id restored.

It is bad connection in plug or broken wire.If the wire strands are broken they still touch and complete circuit. They loose connection for a moment as they are moved by turning wheel or going uneven road, bumps light will come on.

I finally seem to have resolved this but I'm still not certain what was causing it. I took both wheels off on Saturday, checked and cleaned the connectors, rechecked the wires for damage, all of the stuff I'd done the previous time in fact, but this time it seems to have worked. I've done several journeys since and haven't seen the warning on the DIS again, fingers crossed this time. I'd rather have found something obvious but I'm just happy that the warning doesn't come on sporadically like it was.
