Default Condensation

Hi - I've had a quick scan but wondered if anyone has any ideas. My '02 D2 gets quite bad condensation overnight/if left a few days. It clears quickly with climate on. Rear screen seems worse than other windows, but I do tend to leave the blind up so this may be why. I had a MK4 GTi that did the same, but this was due to a cracked scuttle letting the rain in and soaking the carpets. My carpets are as dry as they should be in the current climate and the issue existed before the rains. Any ideas? Blocked drainage channels?

Cheers!

Dan

It's a near certain sign of blocked drains somewhere.
Have you looked UNDER the front carpets, they can soak up literally gallons of water.......

I thought it would be - yes, carpets seem to be dry underneath. Are the drains easy to find?

There are hundreds of posts on the drains if you search the forum. Easiest to find are top rear of the front wheel arches - they have long rubber 'teats' to squeeze! Then there's one in the middle of the scuttle that is hard to find but easy to test - poor in some water to the side of the wiper motor and ask a friend to look for 2 streams under the car either side of the transmission. Then aircon drains - access is fiddly as the transmission tunnel carpets have to come out, but easy to identify (orange) and remove for cleaning. Then sunroof drains, front and back - not done those, so you'll need to read the posts!

Planned mods: auto-dimming rear view mirror, dash cam (as steamship's), fit the ski hatch, refit philips drl's (or maybe not - nope, definitely not - horrible botch!).

Do you hear any "sloshing" when cornering hard?
Also, what does the "board" under the front passenger carpet look like - any stains from damp?

Amazing answers guys - thank you! No sloshing, no - I've not checked the look of the board but it all feels dry.
Right, I'm off with a torch to start searching for those teats! I had to do the sunroof drains on my early '70's deluxe VW type 2 sunroof so will try the same technique! Great tips on where the others are though. Cheers!

There's a whole load of work (and hurt) for some, best to try and figure out what's coming in where first of all.
Are your rear carpets damp at all?

Seems odd that there's no sign of wet carpets.

One other point, mine mists up if the aircon is turned to 'econ' (off) in damp weather - easy fix if that's all it is.

That's what I can't work out! I've checked door seals, carpets, door cards, as I thought the membrane may be damaged, rear seal, scuttle for damage etc etc, I double checked the carpets again last night. Definitely dry. I'm going to have a go at the drains next (when it stops raining for 5 minutes!)

Does your air conditioner work?

When aircon is working it removes moisture from car when you drive.

If it doesn't the moisture tend to accumulate in this 'floody' bloody climate.
