Is there actually a drain plug on the front diff? It is evident that there are drain plugs on the Torsen and the rear diff but not the front.

Don't think there is a drain for the final drive unit just a filler, in front the driveshaft.

Looking at the ZF parts catalogue it doesn't seem as if there is one.

I'll top it up then.

Good catch there is not

You have to loosen the bolts on the one side where the diff is located and then without letting the front diff fall out pop the bottom of the cover out so the fluid can drain out.

Or I suppose you could also try to suction it out of the fill plug.

I like method #1

I guess the potential for leaks from disturbing the o-ring is quite high? Is it worth the risk?

I did this last year. Try to suck most of it out through filler plug. Removing the cover requires the removal of quite a few other things to access all the bolts and i dropped the sub-frame i think to get the lower ones - cant remember which ones. What is looks like with Final Drive removed:

I wouldn't bust your balls over it tbh, just remove what you can and top up, it will be fine. Very little contamination in there and the magnets do there job to attract any 'grindings'.
