I connect the connector to the car using the tail light unit, but the LED's don't light up? whereas they do if I test them separately on the board using the battery (though I take your point about the voltage on my test bed battery)

What can I do to progress the testing of the control board?

I take it you cleaned all the green crud off the black connector?

Also are you sure the supply wires from the control board are going to the correct orientation on the led daughter boards?

It is possible the control pcb is dead though, would need a spare to prove it.

Wink

I do have a spare but it's also not working! I wonder if these boards are coded to the car? In other words should my spare which I've bought off eBay still work with my car?

They are not coded, just plug and play

okay, so if they're not coded, and my new 'donor' board yields no results, then it means its a duff?

hmm.. I'm still trying to work out which mcd/brightness LEDs I should go for..so many to choose from - apparatnlty I need a light measuring device to figure out what brightness the existing ones are!

Shame, because if I knew, it would be a simple case of go in and order them

frustrated!

Straw hat the brightest you can get. I never found any as bright as the originals but they looks better than dead ones. I then 'upgraded' to the later tail-lights. Not sure which I prefer now, the 2003-2007 ones are kind of more A8 unique and classy now but both are pretty terrible quality for such an expensive car. I think they are made by DEPO.
I think if someone offered me a brand new set of PF and a brand new set of FL I would chose the former.
