Default Engine Flush pre oil change?

Hi,

He's due an oil and filter change so I'm going to be doing that before the meet this weekend.

What's the general consensus on running something like Wynn's Engine Flush through before replacing the oil? Any particular experiences, positive or negative, with our engines?

Cheers,

Gregor

I never tried one of those engine flush chemicals.
I did do a different kind of flush by pouring fresh oil in and letting it pour out in the hope of pushing out some more of the old oil, before I put the sump plug back on.
I heard of people doing a double oil change, ie, new oil in, drive the car around briefly, then another oil change.

With a good quality oil there is no need for a flush.

Top lurking

Forte stuff used by garages is pretty well regarded but without taking sump off you'll never really know if it needs it. My old 1.8t used to run much better after fuel system treatment, but that was a dog!

Seems the general consensus is not to bother then. Thanks for the replies.

I'm refilling with Quantum 5w30 so hopefully that will be good enough . . . . .

My 4.2 is recommended to use 5w40 platinum

Worth checking here if you haven't already

Have just done the change with Quantum 5w30. That's what I had bought so that had to be that. Used your link there and got three results -

Cars AUDI A8 3.7i, -Sport P 1996 - 2002
Cars AUDI A8 quattro 3.7i, -Sport (QG0/2) P 1999 - 2002
Cars AUDI A8 quattro 3.7i, -Sport (QG1) P 1999 - 2002

QG1 seems to refer to flexible service intervals and states Quantum 5w30

QG0/2 seems to refer to fixed serviced intervals and states Quantum Platinum 5w40

The first doesn't specify service type but does say, like the QG0/2 fixed service intervals, Quantum Platinum 5w40.

Just checked on eBay and the Platinum 5w40 is cheaper than the 'standard' 5w30 I've bought. Thought 'platinum' would have been more expensive. Any ideas there?

Oil = very confusing

Oil is very confusing. Only recently I read more about it and it seems the thinner it is when cold the better. Although for example Castrol's 0w40 is actually thicker at 20C than their 5w30. There was an article somewhere about it and how most oils are too thick below 50C. Ideally they would be the same thickness as at operating temp.
Also lots of discussion on bobistheoilguy about ester based oils like Fuchs being better than most other synthetic oils, but they are expensive. I just use Castrol Edge 5w30 and hope its ok.

I remember watching a mechanic pour Castrol non-synthetic oil into my old volvo, it was the consistency of honey. Only now do I know that is not good.
If one was really obsessed about minimising engine wear, oil should be warmed up with something like a Wolverine oil pan heater before every start up.

Here is that massive article I read. Hopefully this doesn't say anything misleading.

Interesting chart here, showing just how much more viscous Mobil M1 oil is at a warm outside temperature of 20c its not even on the chart, compared to its viscosity at operating temp.

Just one more thing... came accross this, some used oil analyses of castrol edge 5w30 sometimes come back on the thin side closer to a 20 weight oil. Not sure if this is anything to worry about?

Like you, Goran, I've put in what I've got. This was based on a good bit of research and I'm now just hoping for the best . . . . . . .

Someone tell me tomorrow how much blue smoke I'm getting
