In some states in america a front number plate is not required and audi sell A8 and S8 with just a grill .. no blanking plate just straight chrome slats and it looks lovely
Further to the motorbike argument .. I myself am a biker and always wandered how a brand new bike at £8000 is allowed no front plate and yet a £250000 ferrari 458 italia with aero dynamics that are costing ferrari 17 million a year just to perfect are made to display a front number plate My friend removed his from his 458 quite rightly it was awfull We got stopped and he was given a telling off and a producer to show he had gone and fitted one ... After 3 days we fit a show plate much smaller ... He then got a fine for incorrectly sized characters on the number plate Twisted ..and makes me angry when I had points for the aaverage speed zone and had I have been on my bike I would have had non at all because of no front plate |

I'd like to get hold of a D4 grill to see if it can fit a D3 or if one from a B8 or a 8V will.
I've always questioned it when I went from a bike to a car. But as others has stated, there are semi valid reasons for it. Mate works at a Porsche garage and they get more work in for removing the front number plate than anything else apparently. I'd like to know the quality of aftermarket grills. I've heard some bad reports.

Since this thread is titled "American Style"I thought some of you maybe interested in the newest trend in confusing law enforcement - "Speciality Plates".
Any group of 100 people which have a logo that's not offensive can apply @ $100 a person and viola- your plate is served! Look at the silly array of specialty plates. (warning - there are a lot). I want "EMERGENCY TRAUMA PHYSICIAN" on my A8... literally a licence to speed! ![]() Oh well, at least the A8 affords me the luxury of parking in Physicians' parking...(which in the US is usually closer than handicapped and often enclosed... and always 80% empty). Another favorite is "Sons of Confederate Veterans". ![]() Why don't they just put "BIGOT" or "LOSER"?! (the South lost the Civil War, in case anyone beside the residents of Tennessee with this plate forgot). It's like saying "My Granpappy fought fer slavery and AHM PROUD OF IT!" BTW, Tennessee only requires one plate, typically rear-mounted, but one can display anything on the front; in fact they just approved the use of any "period-appropriate" front plate you fancy. So I have a'67 Impala with TN Antique plates on the back, and a 1967 New York plate on the front. (NY= where I grew up). It's really weird over here. -Tom
