Default Extra Security

For some reason I found myself reading a couple of threads about car thefts and people recalling the time their car got stolen and how they did it.

People taking cars without the need for the key seems the most worrying and got me thinking about adding something a little bit extra to stop them or at least make is difficult for them.

I assume the A8 is also susceptible to the same sort of the theft?

Anyone thought about or got any extra security for their A8 on top of the factory kit?

I'd bet there's an extremely slim chance the car can be broken into using force. I'm not really sure what 'extra' measures you could put in place to be honest. The A8 is a pretty secure car

I recall seeing a video on YouTube a few years ago of a car magazine (can't remember which) taking a sledgehammer to the twin-pane laminated window of a D3 and it was like it was armoured. Very impressive.

Car theft is of course getting more sophisticated with thieves using electronic devices etc. to open cars and start them. I don't know the tech side of it but everytime you remotely lock/unlock your car, the key creates a unique one-use radio code. When a person wants to unlock or start a car, the chip in they key sends a request to the car for it to validate said code and turn off the engine immobilisers. If the car doesn’t recognise the code, it will remain locked and immobilised. A key that has not been programmed can still turn the engine over, but it won't be able to start it, since the immobilisers will still be activated. I remember quite a few years ago a friend had Fiesta the same as mine. We could start eachother's ignitions! But just not start the engine because of the transponder.

Basically, any car which has onboard computers can be hacked and controlled.

First line of defence would be to sleep with your car keys (and a golf club)! DO NOT leave them downstairs on 'the side' or in an kitchen cupboard. Same goes for the spare.

Seen a similar video about the windows and was really impressed with it.

I'm programming keys at the moment for the Wife's Leon and my mates A3. Not as sophisticated as the 8 but it shows you how the immobilizer basically works and it needs programing.

If they got all the kit they can do it, but then that's more expensive than your average D3 is worth.

I hang my car key around the dog's neck. Like to seem try and get the car key off the GSD/Collie cross.

I don't. all keys are put normally put away out of site of anything one looking through the window and close to use at night.

reading some of these threads and the ideas that people have for securing their car from being stolen by electronic hacking has ranged from ODB switches to turn off the plug, ODB port cage to secure it, relocating the port, fuel pump kill switch and the good old crook lock.

Have to disagree with this, I would rather a drugged up gang with no morals took the keys and left, rather than coming upstairs to my family looking for keys.

A car is just a car.

Standard police advice, I believe, is to leave car keys on the bottom steps of your staircase, out of sight or reach from the outside, but easy enough for an intruder to find.

I agree - if they're opportunists, they won't try that hard. If they're not, it's not worth the personal risk.
