Default Off to Mackies for a service

Off to Mackies in Glasgow tomorrow to get the gearbox serviced. In the last few months ( i got the car 2.5 years ago) the gearbox hasnt felt as smooth as it did originally. A bit of thump when engaging. So looking forward to seeing how it is after the service, The car is now at 94k and the box hasnt been services before and I have been promising to do this for the last year!

Well, all good. No problems with excess metal on the magnets or filter. Apparently all looked fine. All fluids used are ZF.

First thing i noticed was that the thump on moving into drive had disappeared then the moving off and subsequent gear changes were as smooth as silk. Definitely a good result and I am sure that it is not just subjective wishful thinking.

Whilst having a word with the main man, he remembered Tin Tin (oh, the Black car bright red seats ) and asked whether I had been to the open day (organised through the Jag forum). Talked about "sealed for life" boxes. Basically said it was load of b*ll*x (as most on this forum know) and that the oil does deteriorate and and that 40k / 2 years was a suitable interval. Also that later 6 speed boxes should now use the same ATF fluid as the 8 speed (along with having the software changes) which I think is generally known.

All in all, a good day.

Glad to hear all is well and you've noticed a marked improvement David, peace of mind comes at a cost and that sounds like money well spent

The recommended period for gearbox service is every 40k miles or two years they say? I'd barely cover 8k miles in my D2 in two years (it took me 9 years to cover 40k) but looking at the repair bills for the gearbox it's probably as essential as changing the engine oil and filter, and equally as important to have it done properly

A better result than when I picked up mine from Chester Transmissions after the oil flush 18 months ago then - clutch starting slipping badly within 5 miles, so I knew then that I'd need to make a 200+ trip to Mackies..

Its funny, but when I mentioned Chester, the Mackies guy gave a wry smile. When I asked why, saying that I would expect him to disparage them as they were opposition, he just said that he didnt think they were ZF approved agents. I thought that they were?
