I have also noticed over the last 12 months how the numbers for sale keep getting fewer and fewer.

eBay and Autotrader just do not have that many anymore. Its a shame as many must be broken for parts the second the gearbox has a wobble or the cambelt service is just too much for the owners.

That's what scares me, the gearbox, I don't know that much about it but it seems like a fairly common issue....still I wouldn't mind have D2 as long is from someone here and with an@l ''maintenance regime''

An an@l maintenance regime will help Marcin, but not much.

They don't give any warning, they just go bang one day, game over.

Just like a dangerous relationship, we've all been there, haven't we?

You always think back to that relationship, admit it

Oh, I totally agree, if I could fit a D2 S8 in my garage I'd have one as a 2nd car in a flash.

As for it being 'game over', bad choice of words, I've been very vocal on this forum about people being better off spending the money on a gearbox rebuild than scrapping and buying something else.

I did the latter and completely regret it, would defo spend on the gearbox if I had the time again

I'm another one that bit the bullet and put a new gearbox in - which I can now look after from new and regularly change the oil in etc

From the other side of the coin, my old D2 3.7 had covered 192K miles when I sold it to another member here. He and his wife have pilled on the miles and its still going strong. The car had a complete history, and the gearbox was still original after 13 years and all those miles.

D2 is a fantastic car, has less things to wrong than the D3 and most things seem cheaper to fix, well except the gearbox and oil cooler.

Even when they go bang, it's not typically game over, more a question of whether the owner is prepared to/has the cash for a rebuild. As this is c.£3k for rebuild at Mackies, it's likely to be put off some owners, but gives peace of mind for at least 3 years/another 100k miles.

I think there's a hardcore of owners (some of us included…) who will continue to think that a D2 in VGC (for around £5k) + a £3k rebuild is better ownership proposition than an inferior £10k machine that will probably throw up more problems and cost, and lose more value in the long run.

I would have a D2 with the box sorted every day of the week, I would even take one without the box done and have a few quid in the bank to do it when needed.

A well sorted and looked after D2 is a rare beast and worth every penny.

Maybe I need a 2.8 to drive to work in....

I guess I'm the odd one out, then. I loved my D2, but I MUCH prefer my current D3 - both in terms of looks and also how it drives...

Go figure...
